About Us

Prof. Athanasios Valavanidis (Athens 1945) received his BSc degree in Chemistry from the University of Thessaloniki (1963-68), his MSc degree from UMIST (1970-71) and his PhD from King’s College, University of London (1973-77). He was a visiting research postdoctoral fellow at the University of Birmingham (1981-82), at the University of York (1985 & 1988) and at the Louisiana State University, USA (1989). In 1978 he started as an Assistant in the Department of Chemistry, University of Athens, assigned to the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry. He became a Lecturer in 1982, Assistant Prof. in 1992, Associate Prof. In 2001 and Professor in 2009.

His research projects focus on: Free radical chemistry, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, HPLC, applications of spin trapping techniques; Studies of mechanisms for antioxidant activity of plant extracts and measurements of polyphenols (fruits, vegetables, olive oil, wine); Carcinogenic mechanisms of metals, PAHs and pollutants with redox potential (particulate matter, dusts,  combustion of plastics materials etc); Ecotoxicological studies with aquatic organisms.

Prof. Valavanidis has been the author and/or co-author of over 20 books and over  50 scientific papers on free radicals, environmental chemistry, carcinogenic mechanisms of toxic chemicals, ecotoxicological studies, etc. Furthermore he has written more than 100 scientific reviews and popularized articles on environmental science and chemical issues in Greek and in English.

Dr. Thomais Vlachogianni (Munich, 1977) studied chemistry at the University of Athens (Greece) and obtained her diploma in 2001. She continued her studies at the same university, where she received her MSc in Environmental Chemistry and Technology (2003) and her PhD in Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology (2007), while investigating the mechanisms of oxidative stress mediated toxicity induced by environmental pollutants (metals, PAHs, etc.) and the potential usefulness of oxyradical-mediated responses as biomarkers for marine pollution monitoring.

Since 2008, she has been working at the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development as a Programme and Policy Officer, and has been involved in several projects and activities implemented at European and Mediterranean level, covering various thematic areas such as environmental protection and sustainable development, nanotechnologies and endocrine disrupting chemicals, marine pollution including marine litter, biodiversity conservation and invasive alien species, water resources management in transboundary settings, public participation in environmental decision making, etc.

Author and co-author of more than 90 publications (scientific papers, books and chapters in books, technical reports, etc.) covering a wide spectrum of thematic areas, with some 2992 citations and i10-index equal to 16.
